After the Supreme Court of India ruled that homosexuality is no longer a crime, saying sexual orientation is natural and people have no control on it, the decision witnessed immense jubilation and joy from the LGBTQ community. Many Bollywood celebrities also chose to come out in support of the court’s verdict.
Even in the past, many B-town celebs have lent their support to the call for decriminalising homosexuality and called for the scrapping of the archaic Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which pegged consensual sex between humans of the same gender as a punishable offence.
This morning the SC observed in its ruling that consensual sex between adults in private space, which is not harmful to women or children, cannot be denied as it is a matter of individual choice. Section 377 results in discrimination and is a violation of constitutional principles, the court stated.
Bollywood celebrities like Karan Johar, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, screenwriter Apurva Asrani and many more took to their social media handles to celebrate the Supreme Court’s verdict with congratulatory messages.
Karan Johar tweeted, “Historical judgment!!!! So proud today! Decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing #Section377 is a huge thumbs up for humanity and equal rights! The country gets its oxygen back! 👍👍👍💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏”
