Independence Day 2018: 15 Movies on India’s freedom to watch

Seventy-one years ago, India got its freedom from the British rule and today on Independence day, we bring you some of the movies which take you through the freedom struggle to binge on this day if you plan to spend your day at home with your loved ones.

Here are some patriotic songs you should listen to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day.

‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo’

This song will be on the top of the list forever. The song has been crooned by the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and was written by Kavi Pradeep. It was composed by C Ramachandra.

The song commemorates Indian soldiers who died during the Sino-Indian War in 1962. Lata Mangeshkar performed it live for the first time on January 27, 1963, at the National Stadium in New Delhi. The then President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru were also present at the venue.

‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’

Featuring Manoj Kumar, ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ is one of the immortal songs patriotic songs the Indian cinema has given to us. The song is from the movie ‘Upkar’. The film marked the official debut of Manoj Kumar as a director.

The song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and the lyrics are by Gulshan Bawra.

‘Dil Diya Hai Jaan Bhi Denge’

The song is from the film ‘Karma’ starring Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Sridevi, Dara Singh and Anupam Kher. The film was directed by Subhash Ghai. The song is crooned by Mohammad Aziz and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

‘Sandese Aate Hain’

JP Dutta’s ‘Border’ is the movie one would never forget. Each moment, each song from the film will bring out the proud Indian inside you. And ‘Sandese Aate Hain’, the 10-minute long song will never make you feel that the song is too lengthy. The video features all the army men shown in the movie and depicts their feelings. It was written by Javed Akhtar, composed by Anu Malik and sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam.

‘Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hain’

The song from ‘Roja’ was composed by music maestro AR Rahman. Sung by Hariharan, the lyrics were written by P K Mishra. The film is directed by Mani Ratnam and starred Arvind Swamy and Madhoo. The film was released on August 15, 1992.

‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’

The ‘Mozart of Madras’ AR Rahman has given us many songs to cherish. And ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ tops the list. The song is from his studio album ‘Vande Mataram’. The lyrics are by Mehboob. The song was second on the list when a media company conducted an international poll to choose the ten most famous songs of all time from around 7000 songs selected from all over the world.

‘Mera Rang De Basanti’

The song ‘Mera Rang De Basanti’ from ‘The Legend Of Bhagat Singh’ is again composed by AR Rahman. The song is penned by Sameer and sung by Sonu Nigam along with Manmohan Waris. The movie features Ajay Devgn as Bhagat Singh, Sushant Singh, D Santosh and Akhilendra Mishra.

‘Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera’

Shah Rukh Khan won millions of hearts with his performance in ‘Swades’. The film by Ashutosh Gowariker received widespread critical acclaim and considered a cult classic of Hindi cinema. The lyrics of the song ‘Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera’ are by Javed Akhtar and it is composed by none other than AR Rahman. The song is sung by Rahman himself and will definitely leave you teary-eyed.

‘Ae Watan’

We already have a legendary song ‘Ae Watan Ae Watan’ from the film ‘Shaheed’ (1965). The song is composed and penned by Prem Dhawan. It is sung by Mohammed Rafi and will be our first love always.

Now, a new song ‘Ae Watan’ from the film ‘Raazi’ starring Alia Bhatt has also won our hearts. It is sung by Arijit Singh and the music composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy while the lyrics are by the legend, Gulzar.
